Nancy Chockley Founding President and CEO of NIHCM Retires: Avik Roy Named Successor
Washington, D.C., May 14, 2024 – The National Institute for Health Care Management Foundation’s (NIHCM) Founding President and CEO, Nancy Chockley, recently retired after 31 years at the helm of the organization. Effective May 1, 2024, Avik Roy, the Co-Founder and President of The Foundation for Research on Equal Opportunity (FREOPP), and a longtime member of NIHCM’s Advisory Board, assumed the role of President and CEO of NIHCM Foundation and NIHCM LLC.
A master strategist and innovator, Nancy founded NIHCM LLC and NIHCM Foundation in the early 1990s, working with several health industry leaders. “Collaborating with so many of the brightest people in health care to make NIHCM a reality and see the organization’s positive impact has been immensely satisfying. Now, it is my pleasure to see Avik step into the role of NIHCM President and CEO. Over the years, I have observed his insight, wisdom, and important ideas. I know he will do an excellent job of moving NIHCM forward,” she said.
Avik is widely recognized as a thought leader on health care reform. Along with his roles at NIHCM and FREOPP, he serves as Policy Editor at Forbes, as an Aspen Institute Health Innovators Fellow, and as an advisor to the Bipartisan Policy Center and the National Academy of Medicine’s RWJF Health Policy Fellowship, among other organizations. His writing has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, and elsewhere; and he has appeared on CBS, NBC, PBS, CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, and other outlets.
“I am grateful for the confidence Nancy and the NIHCM Board have placed in me, and for the opportunity to carry on Nancy’s legacy of advancing high-impact, evidence-based programming that improves health care for all Americans,” Avik said. “NIHCM is a unique organization that fosters collaboration among leaders with many different perspectives to spark new ideas for improving health care. NIHCM’s mission has long been a passion of mine. I look forward to advancing that mission in this new role, and to charting the future of the organization.”
Prior to founding NIHCM, Nancy was a principal in a consulting firm that is now part of Oliver Wyman. She developed NIHCM because she saw a need for an unusual organization that would bring business leaders, policymakers, and other experts together to improve the quality of health care and lower costs. Working with the support of an outstanding group of forward-looking health plan CEOs, Nancy launched NIHCM LLC in 1993.
As the health care landscape grew more complex, Nancy and the NIHCM board expanded its mission with the establishment of the NIHCM Foundation, which focused on building a strong evidence base on health policy and supporting the work of leading health journalists and researchers. Because of her vision and leadership, NIHCM grew to become a high-impact, nationally respected organization that has effectively informed policy and the public conversation on improving health care for decades.
NIHCM’s Board of Directors now has a combined revenue of nearly $400 billion. Its Advisory Board includes some of the top health care thought leaders in the country. Through the Foundation, NIHCM provides $1 million a year in grants to journalists and researchers to ensure their independent work remains a catalyst for positive change in health care.
The portfolio of programs produces work that informs and educates thousands of policymakers, health care leaders, community health workers, and health advocates each year. The awards program has given $1.2 million to recognize and encourage the work of top journalists and researchers. In addition to supporting the work of NIHCM Foundation, NIHCM LLC’s charitable giving program has donated more than $1 million to address food insecurity, homelessness, and the needs of children.
“We owe Nancy a great deal of gratitude for her incredible vision in founding NIHCM and her commitment to making it the immensely effective and valuable organization it is today,” added Gary D. St. Hilaire, Chair of the NIHCM Board of Directors and CEO of Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey. “We are also very fortunate that in Avik, we have a proven, highly successful thought leader. In his decade as a trusted NIHCM advisor, he has demonstrated great insights into the health care industry and its challenges, as well as his dedication to NIHCM’s mission. He is the right person to lead NIHCM into its next chapter.”
