Webinar: Improving Early Identification & Treatment of Adolescent DepressionAugust 26, 2009, 1:00-2:30pm ETApproximately one in five children and adolescents experiences mental health problems requiring some form of mental health intervention. The most common mental health disorder among adolescents is depression, with over 25 percent of adolescents affected by at least mild symptoms. In 2007 eight percent of adolescents experienced a major depressive episode, and these youth are at greater risk for suicide and more likely to engage in risky behaviors such as substance abuse and smoking. Health plans are particularly interested in assessment, identification and treatment tools and materials for primary care providers who are most likely to be the first physician to encounter an adolescent with mental illness. This webinar will explore the current state of adolescent mental health, with a particular focus on adolescent depression. It will also discuss the current guidelines, including the recent U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommendation, and review effective screening tools for primary care providers to identify depression among adolescents and provide appropriate treatment or referral. Finally, the session will highlight current health plan efforts to implement mental health checkups, develop a system of referrals in the primary care practice to facilitate better treatment of mental health issues, and create reimbursement mechanisms for these services.More information: |
