Investing in the Future Health Care Workforce

July 2012

Download the Issue Brief

Health care provider shortages and maldistribution continue to be significant hurdles to ensuring that women and children have access to high-quality health care. This issue is set to become even more acute as demand for health services escalates due to the growth and aging of the population, the increasing need for chronic disease treatment, and the ACA insurance expansions, which could cover as many as 14.6 million additional women and 3.2 million additional children. Health plan foundations are helping to build community capacity to meet this demand through grant programs and initiatives designed to bolster the health care workforce. This brief, "Investing in the Future Health Care Workforce," highlights several of these efforts and outlines strategic opportunities for health plan foundations to have even greater impact in the future.
