Television and Radio Journalism

NIHCM Foundation has accepted entries for its First Annual Health Care Television and Radio Journalism Award.  Entries are currently being reviewed by an independent panel of judges.  Winners will be announced June 16th and posted on our website.


The First Annual NIHCM Foundation Health Care Television and Radio Journalism Award

Definition:

Recognizing excellence in television and radio reporting on health care issues and policy

 

Award and Prize:

A $10,000 prize will be presented to the winner at a dinner in Washington, DC on June 16, 2008.

 

Selection Criteria:

  1. New insights generated by the reporting
  2. Impact on health care policy
  3. Quality of writing and production

Eligibility:

  1. Entries must originally have aired between January 1, 2007 and December 31, 2007  
  2. Entries will be accepted from staff employees of national or local news organizations, nationally-distributed cable programs, or from freelance journalists who have produced reports disseminated by same
  3. Online stories will be accepted if produced for and disseminated originally on the web in affiliation with a television or radio news organization.  Material repurposed from other media will not be accepted.

Award process and rules:

  1. Entries must be postmarked by March 14, 2008.  
  2. Entries must include TWO copies EACH of:
    1. Completed ENTRY FORM
    2. The script
    3. The entry (see below for submission formats)
    4. A written description of the entry and its impact; length not to exceed 100 words
  3. A ten dollar ($10.00) handling fee is required (check payable to NIHCM Foundation)
  4. Television entries must be submitted on DVD
  5. Radio entries must be submitted on CD
  6. Web entries must be submitted on DVD
  7. Commercials should be ommitted
  8. Each DVD or CD must be labeled with the story title, name of entrant and organization, airdate, and length of entry.  DVDs and CDs should be in cases, appropriately labeled, with some form of identifying information written on the disc in permanent ink.
  9. One story per DVD or CD
  10. A single topic series will be considered as one entry
  11. Limit of three (3) entries per entrant

The winning entry will be selected by an independent panel of current and former journalists:

  • Walt Bogdanich, Assistant Editor, The New York Times; Former Producer, ABC News and 60 Minutes, CBS
  • Steve Cheng, Former Producer, Dateline NBC
  • Callie Crossley, Television Commentator, WGBH; Radio Commentator, NPR; Former Health and Medicine Producer, 20/20, ABC
  • Susan Dentzer, Health Correspondent, NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, PBS
  • Alan Murray, Executive Editor, Online, The Wall Street Journal; Panelist, Washington Week in Review, PBS
  • Stone Phillips, Former Anchor, Dateline NBC
  • Julie Rovner, Health Policy Correspondent, NPR
