The Third Annual NIHCM Foundation Health Care Television and Radio Journalism Award 

***DEADLINE EXTENDED TO MARCH 3***

Definition:

Recognizing excellence in television and radio reporting on health care issues and policy 

Award and Prize:

A $10,000 prize will be presented to the winner at a dinner in Washington, DC in May 2010.

Selection Criteria:

  1. New insights generated by the reporting
  2. Impact on health care policy
  3. Quality of writing and production

Eligibility:

  1. Entries must originally have aired during calendar year 2009 
  2. Entries will be accepted from staff employees of national or local news organizations, nationally-distributed cable programs, or from freelance journalists who have produced reports disseminated by same
  3. Online stories will be accepted if produced for and disseminated originally on the web in affiliation with a television or radio news organization.  Material repurposed from other media will not be accepted.

Award process and rules:

  1. Entries must be postmarked by February 26, 2010***DEADLINE EXTENDED TO WEDNESDAY, MARCH 3***
  2. Entries must include:
  • SEVEN copies of the entry (in CD or DVD format)
    • Television and web entries must be submitted on DVD
    • Radio entries must be submitted on CD
    • Commercials should be ommitted
    • Each DVD or CD must be labeled with the story title, name of entrant and organization, airdate, and length of entry. 
    • One story per DVD or CD
  • TWO copies EACH of:
    • Completed ENTRY FORM 
    • The script
    • A written description of the entry and its impact; length not to exceed 100 words
    • A brief biography and contact information for person(s) to share in award (e.g., producer, director, reporter, etc.)

     3.  A single topic series will be considered as one entry
     4.  Limit of three (3) entries per entrant

The winning entry will be selected by an independent panel of current and former journalists:

  • Walt Bogdanich, Assistant Editor, The New York Times; Former Producer, ABC News and 60 Minutes, CBS
  • Steve Cheng, Producer, ABC News
  • Callie Crossley, Television Commentator, WGBH; Radio Commentator, NPR; Former Health and Medicine Producer, 20/20, ABC
  • Susan Dentzer, Editor-in-Chief, Health Affairs; former Health Correspondent, NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, PBS
  • Alan Murray, Executive Editor, Online, The Wall Street Journal; Panelist, Washington Week in Review, PBS
  • Stone Phillips, Former Anchor, Dateline NBC
  • Julie Rovner, Health Policy Correspondent, NPR
